"Would you believe…" The J. Clyde is 3!

5 April 2010 No Comment

The J. Clyde is turning THREE YEARS OLD!  After a very “soft” opening on St. Patrick’s Day 2007, The J. Clyde officially GRAND OPENED on Friday, April 13, 2007.  You guessed it we are superstitious!  To celebrate that day, we are tapping three beers never before served in Alabama.  All three are from Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales in Dexter, Michigan.  The J. Clyde will be one of only a handful of places in the world to carry Jolly Pumpkin on draught.

On this day April 13, 2010, we’ll tap these three beers:

Oro de CalabazaBrewed in the Franco-Belgian tradition of strong golden ales.  Spicy and peppery with a gentle hop bouquet and the beguiling influence of wild yeast.

Bam Bière – An artisan farmhouse ale that is golden, naturally cloudy, bottle conditioned and dry hopped for a perfectly refreshing balance of spicy malts, hops and yeast.

Bam Noire– Dark Farmhouse Ale – dark, smooth, delicious.  Aromas of worn leather and cool autumn nights. Notes of sweet plum and toasted raisin, hints of coffee and cacao. Lingering tart and refreshing finish.  Only available for a few short months.  Not to be missed.

More excellent beers will be coming throughout the year from Jolly Pumpkin so stay tuned.  Their beers are very interesting.  They utilize open fermentation vessels, a very traditional type of vessel that allows for the fullest flavor development. At the end of fermentation, the yeast is harvested off the top of the fermentation vessel and stored for re-pitching into subsequent beers.

Jolly Pumpkin uses very traditional methods to mature their beers as well. These methods may take longer, and be more labor intensive, but they are well worth the effort. While most other breweries mature their beer for relatively short periods in giant stainless steel tanks, Jolly Pumpkin matures their beer in oak casks. This contact with the wood gives the beers unmatched depth of character, and subtleness of flavor.

The J. Clyde shares a birthday with a few other noteworthy characters including the founder of the University of Virginia – Thomas Jefferson.  Also, as some of you may have guessed the by title of the post – Don Adams a.ka. Agent 86 was born on April 13th!  And of course, Jason Clyde Hartley for whom The J. Clyde is named.
