The image below is a little reminder that Thanksgiving is a truly American (and Canadian) holiday as officially stated by New Hampshire way back in 1782.  Beer has been brewed in this country since the earliest days Europeans set foot on the continent.  One of the first things the settlers looked for upon arriving were sources of water so they could brew beer.  However, Europeans were not accustomed to such bountiful supplies of fresh water like we had in America.  In Europe, brewing was a means of sanitizing water.  This was necessary as water-borne illnesses were transmitted through various bacteria.  Part of the brewing process is to boil water for at least 60 minutes which killed any bacteria in the water.  Beer was therefore quite common.

Water sanitation is much better in Europe now; however, beer is still consumed at holiday meals and celebrations as it is in America.  So, enjoy your pumpkin pie and ale.  Cheers!
