One of my favorite holidays, the 4th of July sort of breaks up the summer for me. I abhor hot weather…and…summers in Alabama are abusively LONG and HOT! So, tomorrow, Friday July the 3rd by 5pm we will be tapping a very special cask of Good People Brewing Company’s Brown Ale.
Jason conditioned this beer with Hibiscus Flower and Centennial Hops. This version of Good People’s Brown Ale will be a totally different beer than what you are accustomed to - a bit drier, hoppier. It will have more fruit and citrus characteristics than the standard.
We’ll have the stock Brown Ale on draught too for those of you who like comparing cask to keg!
We only have a single pin of this beer so it won’t last long. What is a pin you ask? Remember that a firkin is a 10.8-gallon cask especially designed for conditioning and dispensing cask ales, and a pin is the exactly same, but half the size. So, we only have half the ale this week, but I think this particular version makes up for it in taste!
Here’s an interesting website with a bit more information about the names of casks and their sizes. Remember that the volumes are given in Imperial units which are 20% greater than what we’re accustomed to. http://www.fatbadgers.co.uk/Britain/casks.htm
Cheers and HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!
This is no gimmick! So please keep reading.
We’ll be tapping a new cask this Friday from Good People Brewing Company - Birmingham’s Local Brewery. It’s an IPA with “some Vanguard and heaps o’ Centennial.” Might I suggest sauerkraut balls with that beer!
Next we have a new Belgian on draught - Piraat. This is an exceptional beer. Style is Belgian IPA and IMO it’s one of the best in this style. Never had it on draught, so it should be incredible.
We’ll also be tapping Olde Towne’s Emancipation Ale - a double IPA that folks have been raving about up in the Rocket City. It clocks in at a hefty 10%. We’re fortunate Olde Towne saved a few kegs for The J. Clyde and I am very excited to have this one. They only made a small batch so it won’t last.
Also, we’ll be bringing back Andygator a very nice doppelbock from Abita.
…and last but not least, Spaten Optimator. Optimator is another doppelbock so it would be cool to compare this German-produced titan to the Andygator.
Grab a half or full pint of the firkin and then sample the new stuff with this flight: Good People Snake Handler, Olde Towne Emancipation, Piraat, Abita Andygator, and Spaten Optimator. Life doesn’t get any better than this.
Cheers!
Ya’ll may have seen our new menus lately that incorporate ALL the NEW beer that’s been coming to Alabama over the past 3 weeks. Well, I’ve recently added ALL the draught beers to that menu format including such favorites as Rogue Brutal Bitter and Good People Brown Ale. In the future, look for a description for each beer to be included on the menu along with an “Index of Beers” up front for those of you who know what you might be looking for and don’t need a Good People Snake Handler or Terrapin Rye Pale Ale or Yeti Imperial Stout or Bigfoot Barleywine explained to you.
My goal is to educate folks who are “new” to beer..well craft beer. This menu is a step in that direction. In the coming days, we will include all the OLD bottle beers in the database that populates this menu. This format should be a benefit to our customers and I will include this information on our website as well.
It will continue to be the responsibility of our servers to explain the beers to ya’ll. It will be my responsibility to strive to find folks to work at The J. Clyde who love beer as much as I want you - our customers - to love beer.
I’ve also added a bit of descriptive language at the front of the menu. It is noted below and is also available permanently here on our website. A list of beers is available by clicking here or by selecting New Beers from the Bar menu.
Cheers!
Menu of Beer
Cask Conditioned Ales - $8 for 20-ounce Imperial Pint and $5 for 10-ounce Half Imperial Pint
The J. Clyde is (was) the only place in Alabama to currently serve cask-conditioned ales. This is beer as it would have been served before modern technologies of refrigeration and forced carbonation! Served at cellar temperature (50 - 55 F) with a beer engine in a traditional British Nonic Glass.
A new cask is tapped each Friday and is served until the last pint is pumped. Ask your server which cask conditioned ales are available now.
|
Flights of Beer
We also have flights of 5 beers. You choose the beers from our draught list; and
we serve you 5 four-ounce steins.
$6
Each >6% ABV selection is an additional $2.
|
Weekly Beer Specials
Monday: All Draught Beers Greater than 6% ABV Are $5 (Limit two per customer)
Tuesday and Thursday: All Draught Beers Less than 6% ABV Are Half Price
|
Glassware
We take extra efforts to keep the correct glassware for each beer that we serve.
Please help us by returning glassware to servers. Without the glassware, we can’t serve the beer!
|
We will sell you a glass from your favorite brewery though! Glasses start at $5 each.

Tonight at The J. Clyde!

Okay, this should be fun. The J. Clyde will be offering the first ever XS beers from Rogue served in Alabama!
Legally!
We’ll be tapping 6 kegs on Thursday, June 4th at 8:30 PM!
You must participate in joining the Rogue Nation and we will be initiated by its President - Big Al! Well, Big Al will be on DVD, but we will all participate before you can enjoy an XS.
For the evening, they will be priced at $5 for a 12 FL serving.

I’ll try to update this post with more details over the next 24 to 28 hours.
Danner Kline and Stuart Carter from Free the Hops will be on hand to say a few kind words about Rogue!
Don’t miss it!
Prost!

We’ll be breaking in three new breweries on
Saturday, June 6th at 8pm.
To the Great State of Alabama at least!
They will be available at the MCBF at Sloss Furnaces as well, but if you’re left out, you can try ‘em at The J. Clyde on Saturday night.
It’s a perfect Rocky Mountain trifecta: Durango,
Great Divide, and Tommyknocker - all from Colorado.

Prost!

Ever wonder what a ton of something looks like? Well, you’ll have a chance to find out what it tastes like on Friday. We’re tapping a cask of Good People Pale Ale “dry-hopped with a ton of Centennial hops” according to Good People’s brewmaster Jason Malone.
“This one should be enjoyed by the hop heads as it will have a huge floral/citrus bouquet” says Jason.
Cheers!
